Grand Canyon Solo Tour: Wellington, KS

I've made it thus far before needing to refuel. I probably could have made it into Oklahoma with this vehicle's fuel economy, but in my eagerness to begin the adventure I neglected to top off my tank in Kansas City and had only 3/4 capacity remaining from the weekend's fill upon leaving Olathe. Live and learn.

Kansas may not have much going for it in terms of roadside scenery, but its highways are very pleasant going... at least, Interstate 35 is the smoothest stretch of pavement I've ever met. Another pleasant attribute are the wonderfully blue and white cloud-spun skies, which quickly become appreciated by any traveler who has spent nearly 200 miles with them dominating the view.

Limitless horizons, good music, and the rhythmic commune between rubber and road are a magic combination for stream of consciousness, and I wish there were a safe way to coalesce these distilled memories of narrative thought as they occur on the road, but for now brief breaks with the Blackberry will have to be my creative conduit. Perhaps someday human ingenuity will bring about a better connection between the mind and the audience, a la the meta-novels of the "Postsingular" orphidnet... just, let's hope we also come up with some privacy barriers to accompany it! :-)

Back on the road I go now... should be in Stillwater in a few hours, at most.

(2 minutes later) Note to self: the Wellington exit is less than three miles from... the Kansas Turnpike toll plaza! So next time, top the gas off before the trip begins, save myself an extra toll booth stop!
